Residential Training

Elite residential training in purpose-built facilities with industry-leading trainers

What is residential training?

Residential training is when your dog comes to live with an expert trainer for a set period. Your dog isn’t boarded in isolation but lives as part of a daily structured routine. Each day includes clear structure: walks, obedience practice, calm downtime, and controlled exposure to new places and people. It is a full reset for dogs struggling with unwanted behaviours, as well as a boost for dogs at the start of advanced obedience or protection work.

Not all issues can be solved in short, hourly sessions.  Some dogs need immersive, day-to-day learning that can't happen in a class or at home.  Residential training gives your dog time to learn new habits and practice them until they stick.

We only have a small number of residential dogs with us at any one time.  This allows us to give the dog our full attention as they require to complete our intense training package.

What kind of dogs do you work with in residential training?

Residential training at Protection K9 Scotland works for a range of needs. It suits dogs with:

  • Dog and/or Human reactive dogs
  • Ongoing behaviour problems that have not improved with standard lessons
  • High drive and working breeds who need proper outlets for energy
  • Dogs with a bite history or risk
  • Dogs preparing for specialist tasks, such as security or field work
  • Poor recall or control

It can help with recall, public behaviour, manners and early stages of protection work. Every dog is different, so a call with a trainer is the best first step to see if it fits your needs.

I would like to say a big thank you to Jim and all the team at protection k9 Scotland. We are so grateful for all the work and time put in to giving Luna all the training. She has benefited from it so much, and has came home as one happy girl. Would highly recommend them.

The level of training is incredible — Otis is not only super obedient and confident, but still as loving and loyal as he was before his training started. What we really appreciated was how much time they spent making sure we understood everything, from handling to ongoing training. Andy and Jim didn’t just hand over Otis and disappear — the support afterwards has been fantastic. If you’re thinking about getting protection K9 Scotland to help train your dog, I honestly wouldn’t go anywhere else. These guys are the real deal — professional, trustworthy, and passionate about what they do.

I can’t thank Protection K9 Scotland enough for their support and expert advice. Rosie has come on so well — the difference is amazing. The new collar has been a total game changer, giving me so much more control and confidence on our walks. Their guidance was clear, kind and professional, and it’s been a real success for both Rosie and me. Highly recommend to anyone looking for real results and genuine care for their dog.

I am mind blown at the change with my boy after 3 weeks residential , before he would lunge bark and just throw himself at people , dogs and even kids , I picked him up and done my handover sessions and I am amazed at how well he walks to heal and all those behaviours he showed before don’t exist anymore !! his recall is amazing , he’d never been let off the lead prior to this , 1 million percent recommend these guys , just take the risk and send your dog I promise you’ll get amazing results 🙌🏼🙌🏼

We started training with Andy—great guy who really knows his stuff.
I had always been against e-collar training, but after speaking to Andy, I quickly learned and got educated with the proper facts and benefits, should I decide to go ahead with it.
My dog is now fully off-lead. We can walk past dogs and people with no issues. He has been off-lead and has seen deer and 20-odd baby rabbits within just a few feet—and he does not chase. All of this without even having to use the collar, but it is there should we ever need it.
All our walks are now stress-free and off-lead, which is a massive achievement. My dog now has more freedom and a better quality of life.

I would highly recommend Protection K9 Scotland, I booked my dog in for 3 weeks residential training and I am amazed at the results. Before he would pull all the time plus he was reactive to dogs and people. After his training, he is able to walk past them and there is no reaction from him which is fantastic. Andy & Jim have gave me the confidence to walk my dog without having to walk in the opposite direction if we see another dog.

How our residential dog training service works

The process starts with a call or a visit, so the trainer can understand what you need. We learn about your dog’s habits, triggers, history and your own goals. A plan is then set, tailored for your dog, not a generic checklist.

The typical stay is three to five weeks. For complex protection or behaviour cases, eight weeks may be needed. Timelines are honest as possible.  We make no false promises or rushed handovers.

Residential training at Protection K9 Scotland is a simple, honest way for dogs and owners to make real changes. It works when owners want help beyond what a class or occasional lesson can offer. We put the welfare and stability of every dog first, using ethical practices and real life as the training ground. Every step, from assessment to aftercare, is about clarity, respect and genuine support - so the progress sticks long after your dog comes back home.
